The town I grew up in has an annual maple festival in April. I found a pattern and had a great idea to make a quilt for my Dad using the beautiful fall colors of a maple leaf in autumn. I have had the pattern since 1991. I decided I would finally make it and gave it as a gift for Christmas in 2007! It only took me a few months to make it, but I was procrastinating for so long.
My Dad passed away unexpectedly in January of 2009. He was only able to enjoy it for one year, when I meant for him to have it more than 15 years before. I now have the quilt at my home. I look at the dedication on the back, made with love for Dad...
I have learned a lesson and when I have an idea, I begin working on that idea, no longer procrastinating for years for me!

And happy belated!
I made my grandmother a quilt for her 85 birthday. Like yourself, it took me awhile for me to get her quilt made and then she passed away in a car accident about 18 months later. At first I wanted to bury the quilt with her but my mother kept it and then gave it back to me.
For along time, I found it hard to look at without hurting but now I look at it ( 6 years later) I see it as something she loved and appreciated. She also was so proud that I made it for her- Do I regret that she could not have enjoyed it more- certainly, but I know that for the time she had it, It gave her comfort and love. Each day she rested, she could wrap herself up in our love for one another.
I am sure your father loved your gift and the idea that you would make something so beautiful for him. I also fairly confident that he was proud of the beautiful piece that you created for him.
We make our gifts of love and hope that are loved ones know that the quilts are labours of love.
There is much effort and emotion that is expressed in the creation by the colors we choose and the designs one picks.
I am sure your dad treasured your quilt and knew how much you loved him. It is a beautiful quilt. Thank you for sharing your moving story and wonderful quilt.
My sincere condolences in the loss of your father.
Warmest regards,
Anna
